Could Ian Flynn improve the quality of the Sonic comics? I asked myself that question over and over again, until finally I got to the issue 160. And my answer is: YES. Ian Flynn was the change that these comics needed, however, I must say that I’m still not happy with the result. Let’s start with the second part of this review.

The improvement in the comics, it was noted almost immediately, starting with the graphics, which fits perfectly with the type of characters of the franchise. While it is true that there are at least a couple of artists in charge of the project, has managed to maintain a single drawing style. This does not mean there is no difference between each artist, but are not as abysmal as before and that is welcome.

The second point is the development of history. Although the comic takes all the above material, from the issue 160 is starting to notice the changes in terms of plot, dialogues and characters. An example is the elimination of characters like Tommy the Turtle and the disappearance of strange cameos. (at least for now)

At this point, I think I can understand why the Sonic Archie Comics began to gain wide popularity among fans of the blue hedgehog. Since SEGA was doing a bad use of his mascot with games like Sonic at the roundtable, Sonic and the magic lamp or Sonic the Werehog, fans began to look for better stories for their hero, and Archie Comics were the answer to their prayers. This, coupled with the taste of the fans for the new mobian girls (you perverts), eventually placing these comics at the height of its popularity. Rightly referred to this period as: The Golden Age of Archie Comics.

This has been my general view of the main story of Sonic comics. As I said in my previous post, Archie also made special comics like Knuckles the Echidna, which tells the adventures of the first Sonic Rival or the recent Sonic Universe, that telling us things like… Tikal… fused with Chaos… (sob)… *snif*… Of these comics I have not spoken, and by god I will not.

So… Sonic Archie Comics are good?
I will be impartial answering this question. YES! I think it’s a good comic and grows very well in his own universe. Not perfect, but I think that all persons who consider themselves a fan of Sonic, should read these comics, at least out of curiosity.

Does that mean I like the Sonic Archie Comics?
NO! Definitely not. Perhaps Ian Flynn did a great job with these comics, but there are still many things that he has failed to correct and with which I disagree.

What are these things?
Find out in the third and last part of my review. Thanks for reading.

After reading all comics (236 to date), I feel the ability to judge these comics, loved by some, hated by others.

In this first part of my review, I will give my opinion on all the comics that were released up to the number 159, because from the number 160, was a radical change in the development of these comics that it’s worth mentioning. Well, let’s start with this.

The first comics dating from 1992 or 1993, I’m not sure about that, and seemed to be based on AOSTH, but using the characters in SatAM (see post of the Sonic TV series).

Both history and humor of the first comics were pretty crazy and not very different from other humor comics of the time, but over time, the comic began to take a little more serious and less silly stories to tell.

As expected, many characters from the series or Sonic games made their appearance in these comics, but there were also several cameos of other characters in comics as the Green Goblin, Lex Luthor and Dr. Doom. No, I’m not kidding. Indeed this happened. In fact, one of the most bizarre cameos I saw was the emergence of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. (WTF?)

Besides having a tangled history, strange cameos and romantic/sticky situations, the comic has had the delicacy to create other comics that serve to explain things that are not explained in the main story, which to me is the equivalent of putting your brain in a blender.

But wait, there’s more. The comic since its beginning, has passed through the hands of different artists, each with a completely different style of drawing. In some cases, the art were too detailed, to the point of making me feel I was reading a X-men comic, but in other cases, the art were so bizarre, that made me feel like I was reading a comic of Ren and Stimpy.

Some say that the comic should have ended at number 50, with the defeat of Julian… I mean… the evil Dr. Robotnik, but the comic continued to exist for a long time, bringing more tangled stories, more sticky romances and more unnecessary characters like Tommy the Turtle.

So far, I think you can get an idea of how was these comics until number 159. From the number 160, the comic was taken over by a man named Ian Flynn, an event that some say marked the beginning of a new era for these comics: The golden age of the Archie comics.

Can Ian Flynn save Maurice… I mean… Sonic from this disastrous comic? Don’t miss the second part of this review.

At this point, I think most people have already realized that the film industry does not have much respect for the public and less for the memories of our childhood.

Today I want to make a brief review of one of the most disappointing remakes I’ve seen in movies: Clash of the Titans (2010)

Before talking about this movie, let’s remember a little the original version of 1981. Clash of the Titans was an interesting cinematography version of the myth of Perseus. Don’t faithfully followed the events of the original myth, but despite the changes, the story was quite entertaining and epic. The special effects were made by the master of stop motion, Ray Harryhausen and the unforgettable soundtrack by Laurence Rosenthal. This was definitely one of those mythological monster movies that we never forget.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Well, now let’s talk about the new version. The first fail I found was Perseus. I don’t know who was the brilliant idea of giving Perseus the appearance of a Marine. And not only that. In the first movie, Perseus was an heroic character, but in this new version, Perseus behaves worse than a cocky teenager. I don’t know if it’s the fault of the actor, but this new Perseus truly pitiful.

The second fail was the story. The first film created its own version of the myth of Perseus, and this new film created its own version of the previous film. In other words: NO RESPECT AT ALL THE ORIGINAL MYTH. Just to give you an idea: In the original myth, Perseus loves Andromeda. In the 1981 film, Perseus loves Andromeda. In the movie 2010, Perseus, barely knows Andromeda. In fact, they created another character to be the love of Perseus. *sigh*

Well, this movie must have something good. The monsters, or more correctly, the CGI. New versions of mythological monsters like Medusa and the Kraken, are the only thing that I think, were pretty good. The problem is that these monsters are just a few minutes on stage. The big showdown against the Kraken will not last three minutes.

To finish. Not satisfied by spitting on a classic mythological film, this year was released Wrath of the Titans (a sequel). I already saw, and I say, is worse than the film of 2010. Many boring plot, shaking camera during the fighting, and less mythological monsters. The good news is that apparently there will not be another sequel. Happily.

As I write the story of Project R, I realize that perhaps my efforts will be wasted.

Why?

Well, first of all, I have a story about anthropomorphic beings, which is based on a franchise of video games for children.

Second, despite his helpless look, this story is not directed at children, it has features that could be ripe severely criticized by censorship.

And third, the target audience for my story, is not as big as I expected. How many young people over 15 are fans of the Sonic franchise?

Before beginning with the publication of my material, I want to clarify a few things about Project R:

1. As I said before, the world of Project R is unrelated to the stories of the games, let alone with Archie comics. It’s a completely different world.

2. While I tried to keep the charm of the Sonic franchise, this story is also filled with moments that perhaps the critical concidere inappropriate for a young audience, such as violence, double meaning jokes and other dark things that exist in the real world.

3. I tried everything possible not to harm the personalities of the official characters, but I have a couple of liberties when writing about them. Such is the case of Tikal, whom I added a couple of interesting details, but don’t affect her charming pacifist personality.

4. Although I have used official character of the games, they don’t have a leading role in history, but still are important characters that accompany the real protagonists of this story. (it was obvious)

With this in mind, it is possible that many people don’t want to read the story of Project R.

Sorry guys, but from the beginning, Project R has been my response to a series of horrors that has undergone one of my favorite video game characters: Sonic the Hedgehog.

I wanted to do something different. I just hope to live up to your expectations.

Thanks for reading this post.

The pony fever continues to spread through the internet and has been manifested in many ways. At first it was just fan art and video parodies (the famous YouTube Poop), but over time, the fans of Equestria have developed more complex things such as Flash animations and even high-quality 3D games.

Currently there are many flash animators who have created their own videos and parodies of the series. Some with a quality almost equal to the official work. Of these, I will highlight Hotdiggedydemon, an animator who has been creating parodies of the series using a style reminiscent of Ren and Stimpy. Caution: The following video contains scenes of violence and strong language.

Click here to view the embedded video.

And as if this were not enough, there are projects of video games based in the series. The most common are games like “Dress Up”, but you can also find platform games, fighting or RPG. And I’m not talking about simple jobs, the quality of these games is impressive indeed. There are even prototypes of 3D games. One example is the Pony Kart game, created by a group of fans with skills in this kind of things.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Unfortunately, most of these games are in development and we can only see videos of Alpha versions. A page that follows the development of these projects is www.equestriagaming.com. On this page you can find fresh information about these exciting fan games.
